Like New Year's itself, Spanning Connections stretches between past and future and brings those two points into the present. As rendered in photography, paint, water color, drawing, sculpture and mixed media, Spanning Connections' premise is described as "reaching, spanning, connecting… (whose) subjects can include bridges, tunnels, walkways, covered bridges, overpasses, spanning architectural connections and more." It is an exhibition in which "any angle, perspective or theme may be applied."

Said an RAA spokesman, "It's a show that's not only about things that connect. It's also about what passes between those connections, who and what is being connected and also what is kept apart and what is left behind at the other end."

Spanning Connections will host an opening reception on Sunday January 17 from 12 to 3pm in the RAA's T-6 gallery at Fort Tilden in the Rockaways. Many of the artists will be on hand. There will also be refreshments, spirited entertainment and, as has become a hallmark of RAA openings, good and lively company. Rockaway Artists Alliance receptions have previously attracted gallery filling crowds.

Upcoming RAA exhibitions will include To Our Idols and Bodies of Work, both debuting in March, 40 Shades of Green in April and in June Left Brain/Right Brain and a solo show by artist Susan DeCastro.

Other activities include painting classes and other workshops for adults, art and performance classes for kids, upcoming concerts and performances, ongoing Thursday Open Mike Music Nights, monthly RAA Writers Group meetings, as well as events centered around Make Music NY Day and New York's Immigrant Heritage Week.

Spanning Connections artists include: Joseph Abbate, Penelope Atheras, Igor Gushchin, Susan Hines, Dina Kaliko, Linda Kelly, Martha Killian, Denis Macrae, Mary Meade, Sheila O'Hara, Ralph Petagna, Susanne Reith, Vanessa Reith, Jessica Schulman, and Ludmila Vaynberg.

Gallery hours are Saturday 12-4p.m., Sunday 12-4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission to the exhibitions and events is free as is ample parking. For more information and directions call (718) 474-0861, e-mail rockart116@aol.com

RAA works in partnership with the National Park Service at Gateway National Recreation Area and in part is supported by NYC Department of Cultural Affairs, JP Morgan Chase, The Independence Community Foundation and Brooklyn Brewery. Fort Tilden is an historic and now decommissioned U.S. Army post. Its entrance is located off Rockaway Point Boulevard across from Riis Landing, and near the entranceway to the The Marine Parkway Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge. Its nearest cross street is Beach 169th and it is also a few miles west of the Cross Bay Bridge. Fort Tilden today it is home to many cultural, community and sport activities and serves as a premier part of Gateway National Recreation Area, a unique urban national park that spans several boroughs and incorporates beaches, marshlands and bird and wildlife refuges. Winter, summer, spring and fall its beaches, fields, trails and rich offerings extend sanctuary to many a city weary traveler.
