The Art of Robin and William Pogrebitskiy

Sunday, August 16 - Sunday, August 30, 2009
Reception: Sunday August 16 1-3pm

sTudio 7 Gallery

Stirring together a rich history of art and of life, the Rockaway Artists Alliance newest exhibition The Art of Robin and William Pogrebitskiy crosses the waves of time to not only present the work of this well known sculptor but also to recall the fine drawings of his father a generation before. The exhibition will open on Sunday, August 16 at the RAA's sTudio 7 Gallery at Fort Tilden in the Rockaways. It runs through Sunday August 30. An opening reception on Sunday August 16 from 1-3 will complete the show's intimate atmosphere with music, refreshments and good company.

A fixture of this seaside community, Robin Pogrebitskiy is most well-known for his intricate and unique wood sculptures. Often carved from ocean smoothed driftwood, sculpted and then polished to a fine blond, his work is shaped to its roots by the skills of his hands and the texture of his unrestricted imagination. Walking through this prolific collection surrounding his workspace in T-7 is like winding through a forest of lovingly crafted yet playful dreams.

"Robin inherited his ability and passion for art from his father Bill," states a short bio specially prepared for the exhibition with the help of Lolita Pogrebitskiy, his daughter-in-law. Family and friends also took part.

And for the first time The Art of Robin and William Pogrebitskiy brings together the work of both father and son. The drawings of William (Bill) Progrebitskiy reach back over half a century and across continents and oceans. Many of them political in nature, they reflect his journey from the Ukraine, where he was born in 1905, to Austria, France, America, and then the far eastern part of Russia. His parents were active participants in the first, failed, Russian Revolution. Sadly, as a soldier in the Soviet Army, he died shortly before the end of World War II in 1945. Robin himself, born in 1929, also served in the military beginning in 1949. "When he was 40," according to his biography, "he got a hobby of woodcarving and became very involved and professional at it. In 1991, he moved from the USSR back to America. He continued with his hobby in New York."

"Even at age of 80 he continues to work every day. This exhibition represents only a small part of Bill's and Robin's works."

Both Robin and Bill Pogrebitskiy are well represented in this unique showcase. The Rockaway Artists Alliance would like to invite one and all to the sTudio 7 Gallery to celebrate the lives and enjoy the work of these two exceptional men.
