EXHIBITIONS / EVENTS

Gifted 2009

Exhibition plus special events:
Sat., November 14 — Sun., December 13, 2009
Opening Reception: Sunday, Nov. 15, 1-3 PM
sTudio 6 & sTudio 7

On Saturday, November 14 the Rockaway Artists Alliance completes one year of successful exhibitions and opens the doors to another as it welcomes Gifted, a multimedia members' showcase featuring the work of 26 different artists.

On view in the intimate sTudio 6 gallery at Fort Tilden, Gifted will celebrate its opening with a reception on Sunday, November 15 from 1-3pm. Besides artfully presented refreshments and entertainment, many of the artists will also be on hand and lively company will be in abundance. Gifted will be open to the public through Sunday, December 13. In addition many of the works will be available for sale. Appearing along with Gifted will be the unique Glass and Water featuring the intricate works of artists Renee Radenberg and Christian LeGars. The mix of watercolor and glass assemblage invites all into the sTudio 7 gallery from November 21 to December 6. Besides an opening reception on the Saturday the 21st, it will also feature a demonstration/lecture on Sunday November 22, an evening jazz and cocktail affair on the 28th and an evening closing party of December 5th.

This year the RAA has mounted such diverse exhibitions as Heritage, Geometric and Wine & Dine. They have also supported events such as Thursday Open Mike Music Nights, a boardwalk Paint Out, Make Music NY, a food and wine tasting, an afternoon of original plays, music, poetry and prose from the RAA Writers Group, a well attended bake-off and the haunting, highly successful Scary Circus Halloween Extravaganza. The organization's 2010 exhibition calendar will reach forward with such intriguingly titled shows as Spanning Connections, Bodies of Work, Left Brain/Right Brain and Forty Shades of Green.

Gifted itself covers both past, present and future with works of poetry, painting, photography, glicee, watercolor and archival pigment print and invites one into a world within the frame of the artwork. As Susan De Castro, speaking of works like her oil on canvas "Caranaval Still Life" says, "My goal (is) to create excitement for the eye, using vivid color to guide the viewer in and around objects."

Such works as Amanda Francin's evocative acrylic "Swirls" might take the viewer under the sea or to a soft summer soaked "Paradise" rendered in tans and blues. The winding backward look of photographer Dina Kaliko's "Visions on County Road 47, Big Indian NY" might offer a new perspective on what we leave behind. Or the bursting banners and street signs of Daniela Sessa's photograph "East 42nd Street" may turn our point of view entirely.

Gifted 09
Among events planned for Gifted's run are a program of music, poetry and prose reading hosted by Shirl Holt on Sunday November 22 and an afternoon of music with Dan Guarino and guests on Sunday December 13. Both events start at 1:30pm.

Gifted 09
Among those attending the Fort Tilden sTudio 6 gallery gala were artists Renee Radenberg and Christian LeGars, whose own exhibition Glass & Water will be opening in sTudio 7 on Saturday November 21.

Gifted 09
Scores of gallerygoers enjoyed the lively atmosphere and artistic splendor of the Rockaway Artists Alliance's Gifted, a multi-artist member's show on view through Sunday December 13.

Likewise visitors might be enveloped in the mystery and grace of Yuri Yurov's "Fleeting Glance" or its blue shadowed companion work. Or they may drink in the photo pink visual transparency of Wilda Gallagher's "Wedding Party" or the flowering iridescence of her "Spring Faces".

With each stroke each Gifted artist offers their own view of the world around them, brought to light by their skill, talent and imagination in a one of a kind exhibition. As the artists Fritz expresses it, "I don't want to restrict to the same materials, techniques (or) themes. My creativity takes me in many different directions…just as my life has led me in different directions."

The Rockaway Artists Alliance invites all to come and see where Gifted will take them.

Gifted artists include Ludmila Vaynberg, Yuri Yurov, Sophia Skeans, Marvin Schwartz, Jessica Schulman, Daniela Sessa, Arthur Skowron, Carol Rickey, Dina Kaliko, Fritz (Fred Parise), Maureen McGuire, Karen, Neuringer, James McKay, Denis Macrae, Larrisa Levina, Martha Killian, Dina Kaliko, Ellen Hoyt, Shirl Holt, Igor Gushchin, Dan Guarino, Wilda Gallagher, Amanda Francin, Susan De Castro, Robert Bainbridge, Penelope Atheras and Geoff Rawling.

Gallery hours are Saturday 12-4p.m., Sunday 12-4 p.m. and by appointment. Admission to the exhibitions and events is free as is ample parking. For more information call (718) 474-0861, e-mail rockart116@aol.com
